Dress Your Child Appropriately

The weather in the spring and fall can be crazy, warm one day, freezing the next. Even during the day, the temperature may take a dramatic turn in either direction. It is so easy to leave the house, get into your warm car and take off, forgetting to check the weather forecast, especially for the temperature throughout the day.  Many times, we have had children come to school dressed inappropriately.  It would be snowing outside but the child had no boots or mittens.  It would be a beautiful sunny day and the child would have long pants and a sweater on.

When children are not appropriately dressed for the outdoor weather and therefore have to stay inside with another teacher during recess or outdoor activities, this can disrupt their learning for the rest of the day.  Your child wants to be with their friends, to be a part of the group.  No one wants to be singled out.

Please check the weather every day while you are getting dressed, before you leave home.

If you know your child will be playing outside on a sunny day, put sunscreen on them to protect their skin and give them a ball cap and sunglasses to protect their eyes.  It is a good idea to keep a backup set of clothes in the car, like shorts, pants, and a sweatshirt, just in case. Independent of the weather, it is always a good idea to put a sweater or sweatshirt in your child’s backpack for times when the air conditioning in the school is too cool or the heat isn’t as warm as it is in your house.  If your child is uncomfortable in the classroom because of the clothing they are wearing, they might become antsy and maybe irritable and possibly disruptive. You want your child to be comfortable to get the most out of his school day.
